Does Using a Random Generator Improve My Odds?

No: and any tool that claims otherwise is lying. Every combination in a lottery has exactly equal probability. However, using a random generator does avoid unconscious patterns (birthdays, lucky numbers) that many people cluster around. If you pick numbers other players avoid, you get a larger share of the jackpot if you win. It won't improve your odds of winning, but it may improve what you win.

The Real Odds for Every Prize Tier

Most generators quote the jackpot odds and stop there. The jackpot is the least interesting number on the ticket — it is the other eight tiers that determine how often you actually win anything. Below is every prize level for both major US games, computed directly from each game's matrix rather than copied.

Powerball — 5 from 69, plus 1 Powerball from 26

The total number of distinct tickets is C(69,5) × 26 = 11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338. Every figure below is that total divided by the number of ways to hit the tier.

Adding every tier together gives 11,750,538 winning tickets out of 292,201,338, or 1 in 24.87 to win any prize at all — which matches the figure Powerball publishes. Note that most of those wins are the bottom tier: matching the Powerball alone, which returns the price of a ticket or close to it.

Mega Millions — 5 from 70, plus 1 Mega Ball from 24

Mega Millions was restructured in April 2025. The Mega Ball pool shrank from 25 to 24, tickets moved to $5, and a multiplier is now built into every play. The matrix gives C(70,5) × 24 = 12,103,014 × 24 = 290,472,336 tickets, making the jackpot marginally easier than Powerball's.

Overall odds of winning something are 1 in 23.1, slightly better than Powerball — though at $5 a play rather than $2, the comparison is not as favourable as it first looks.

What Randomness Does and Does Not Buy You

A generator cannot improve your odds. Every ticket in a fair draw has identical probability, and nothing about how you choose the numbers changes that. What random selection can do is change how much of a jackpot you keep if you win it.

Human number choices cluster hard. Dates dominate, which crowds every number into 1–31 and leaves 32–69 comparatively untouched. Patterns drawn on the play slip, arithmetic sequences, and previous winning combinations all attract more players than chance would suggest. Because jackpots are split equally among winning tickets, a popular combination pays less per winner.

So a random pick does not make you more likely to win. It makes you less likely to share. That is a small effect, and it only matters in the rare case where you win at all — but it is the only real argument for using a generator, and it is worth stating honestly rather than dressing up as a system.
